Will the weather be ‘naughty’ or ‘nice’ for Santa? JLT Re meteorologists give their forecast

22 December 2016

  • Cold conditions and reduced visibility, but successful delivery of presents predicted

With only two days until Santa sets off on his epic journey to deliver toys to children around the world, meteorologists from JLT Re have been building up a picture of the worldwide weather conditions ahead of Christmas Eve.

JLT Re’s meteorologists provide real-time monitoring of global weather disturbances, and the team have been closely watching for any adverse conditions that could affect Santa’s journey.

JLT Re meteorologist Brian Bastian said: ‘It’s exceptionally warm in the Arctic for this time of year, but Santa mustn’t be lulled into a false sense of security. Once he leaves home on Christmas Eve, he’ll encounter unseasonably cold conditions in portions of western and southeastern Europe, as well as the western US and Canada, and parts of Russia. Low pressure systems over the Mediterranean and the Middle East, northwestern Europe, Japan and the western portions of North America will reduce Santa and the reindeer’s visibility, and he’ll also encounter a tropical low pressure system situated off the coast of Western Australia which will mean he may have to alter his sleigh flight patterns accordingly.

‘However the good news is that despite some weather disturbances, we’re confident that Santa and his deer will have a good run on Christmas Eve, and is definitely on track to get all his presents delivered on time for Christmas morning.’
