WILL THE WEATHER BE 'FRIGHTFUL' OR 'DELIGHTFUL' FOR SANTA ON CHRISTMAS EVE?

21 December 2018

  • Santa warned that storminess over Eastern Europe and the west coast of North America may result in some turbulence for reindeer flight.
  • Temperature extremes are also expected with bitter cold in western Russia contrasting with a heat wave in Australia.
  • Despite lower than average snow cover in many cities, successful delivery of presents to all children across the globe is expected.

With only three days left until Santa starts his epic journey to deliver toys to children around the world, JLT Re’s team of meteorologists have been keeping a close eye on the worldwide weather conditions ahead of Christmas Eve.

JLT Re’s meteorologists provide real-time monitoring of global weather disturbances for Santa Sleigh Services, and the team is closely watching for any adverse conditions that could affect Santa’s journey.

JLT Re lead meteorologist Josh Darr said, “With snow cover and unseasonably cold conditions well entrenched across Canada, Eastern Europe and Russia, Santa’s trek will start off quickly in the Northern Hemisphere. Once Santa leaves the northerly latitudes on Christmas Eve, the sleigh will encounter tougher landing conditions across the central/eastern US, Western Europe and China as a White Christmas across most of these regions look unlikely.

“A strong area of low pressure over Eastern Europe will likely impair the reindeer’s visibility across the region. Additionally, Santa will encounter unusually strong headwinds along the jet streams above the Atlantic and Pacific that will cause the reindeer to work extra hard to make all the deliveries on time. Fortunately, Santa will get an early taste of his post-Christmas vacation with well above average temperatures across much of Australia and Argentina while evening thunderstorms are anticipated across Brazil.”

Josh Darr concluded, “Despite the lack of snow in many population centers in the Northern Hemisphere, the good news is that the quiet forecast brings high confidence that Santa and his reindeer will have a successful journey on Christmas Eve. Santa Sleigh Services is confident that everything is on track to get all presents delivered on time for Christmas morning.”
