Major Hurricane Matthew has continued to intensify over the weekend, strengthening to a Category 4 Hurricane with no signs of weakening expected in the immediate future.
The predicted northward turn in track did occur on Saturday evening. Hurricane Matthew meandered a bit during the day on Sunday before re-organizing onto a slow track to the northwest, taking it on a path between Jamaica and Haiti.
This region of the Caribbean frequently experiences major hurricane impacts, which can often be catastrophic due to the mountainous terrain that can enhance rainfall totals and cause flash flooding and mudslides, in addition to high winds and coastal storm surge.
The 3 to 5 day forecast remains uncertain, although the majority of model guidance places Matthew offshore of Florida by at least 200 miles. Longer range, anywhere from the Carolinas to the mid-Atlantic could experience impacts from Matthew by the weekend.
